Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology

Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (QNLM), approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in December, 2013, is under joint construction of the national ministries and departments, Shandong Province and Qingdao City. Based in Qingdao with a national and global vision, QNLM conducts researches of both basic and cutting edge levels in line with the national strategy of marine development. Aiming at a world-class comprehensive research center of marine science and technology as well as an open platform for collaborative innovation, QNLM brings in resources and professional teams of the original researches to upgrade China’s competence of independent innovation, and take the lead in China’s marine science and technology.

Visions

QNLM is expected togrow into a world-class research platform and an exchange base for international cooperation in marine science and technology, where top professionals home and abroad do the innovative and collaborative researches that feature originality. To become the world center of marine research, QNLM will be a flagship in radiating the whole country so as to form a complete innovative chain of marine sci-tech as a regional demonstration platform.

Operation

The Ministry of Science and Technology guides and supports the construction of QNLM, monitors and evaluates its operational management as well as organizing and implementing the key research projects.

Shandong Province Government supports QNLM by coordinating the stakeholders in the province and making the supportive measures regarding infrastructure construction, research equipment construction, talent introduction, supervision and assessment. Based on the existing investment, the Province will continue to boost its support to QNLM research and innovation work on marine science and technology during the pilot construction period. 

Qingdao Municipal Government is responsible for the construction and operation of QNLM, regarding the construction of infrastructure, procurement of large equipment and apparatus, as well as constructing the inter-operational platforms. Its supporting effort also covers the selection and recruitment of the personnel, as well as the fund for operating QNLM, and for core researchers and management staff.
